Who would have thought that the original king of the console would win the battle to reclaim its throne? Let August 2007 mark this momentous occasion. In less than one year Nintendo Wii (released November 2006) surpasses lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 (released November 2005) to become the video game console market leader. Sony trails far behind with stagnant PlayStation 3 (PS3) sales. This Apple commercial parody of the PS3 vs. Wii puts things into perspective…

Several factors are attributed to Nintendo’s recent success as the fastest selling game console of all time. The appeal that the Wii has over a wide range of age groups and demographics is one, it dominates international markets when compared to its competition. The price is right too. While PS3 runs for $500, Xbox 360 for $350, the Nintendo Wii sits comfortably at $250.

With the fourth quarter quickly approaching though it’s anyone’s game. Microsoft and Sony are on the offensive. The release of Halo 3 is sure to boost Xbox 360 sales and recent discounts by Sony on 60 GB systems will most likely continue to the 80 GB PS3 once the former is sold out.
